Outline

Credits: 60 ECTS
Tuition: Semi-online

Start date: 14 February 2011
End date: 21 December 2011

Tuition schedule: Two or three evenings a week, Mondays to Fridays from 18.30 to 20.30, to be defined by instructor.

Director: Alfonso Rodríguez-Patón. Contact person: arpaton@fi.upm.es

Instructional objectives: Our students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to successfully undertake the leadership, governance and strategic management of ICT in modern organizations. Additionally, they will develop efficient technological project and ICT service management skills governed by widely accepted standards and best practices, such as the balanced scoreboard, the ITIL and COBIT frameworks, the CMMi model and the PMBOK project management guide.

Prospective Students

This course targets information and communications technologies (ICT) professionals interested in acquiring the training and expertise that they require to take up positions of more responsibility in the areas of ICT, knowledge and innovation management, governance and leadership.

Tailored training: the subject matter of the different modules is customized and tailored (as far as possible) to each student's interests, background and training expectations.

Structure

The master's course tackles ICT governance, management and leadership from three perspectives: the strategic viewpoint (modules 1 and 2), the operational viewpoint (modules 3 and 4) and the tactical viewpoint (module 4). The fifth module (master thesis) involves putting into practice and synthesizing the knowledge and views covered in the earlier modules.

Module 1: Strategic ICT leadership and management 15 February 2011 - 11 March (11 ECTS)
Module 2: Knowledge and innovation management 14 March - 15 April (6 ECTS)
Module 3: ICT project management 26 April - 31 May (8 ECTS)
Module 4: ICT processes, quality and services management 1 June - 28 July (16 ECTS)
Module 5: Master thesis 5 September - 21 December 2011 (19 ECTS)

The methodologies and best practices covered in the different modules include: the balanced scorecard (BSC), the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices framework, the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) ICT governance framework, the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMi) process improvement model and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) project management standard/guide. Working on and studying these best practices and management tools (BSC, ITIL, COBIT, CMMi, PMBOK) the students of this master's course acquire skills and knowledge that are in high demand within the technological business sector.

Master thesis: the master final project or thesis will be a process of synthesis in which students (supervised and tutored by expert master faculty) will develop, write a report on and defend a feasibility study (business case) of a project in their branch of work or a field agreed with the master instructor /tutor.

Teaching methodology: The modules (and the course units of which they are composed) follow the case method, the strategy of learning by doing, self study and reflection and group work. Students will have to deal with situations/cases in which they will have to put into practice the theoretical knowledge that they have acquired.
